Recognized as a historic trailblazer in television and theater, she gained widespread international recognition for her acclaimed role as Davina on Amazon’s award-winning series Transparent. As one of the first openly transgender actors to portray a transgender character on television, Billings has played a pivotal role in expanding authentic trans representation across mainstream media.

Born in Schaumburg, Illinois, Billings developed a passion for performance at an early age through her father, who served as a musical director at the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. In her late teens, she embraced her transgender identity and began performing in Chicago’s vibrant nightlife scene. She rose to prominence as a featured performer at Chicago's famous Baton Show Lounge under the stage name Shanté, winning several beauty pageants before transitioning into professional theater and screen acting.

Career

Billings established herself as a formidable talent in Chicago theater during the 1980s and 1990s, earning accolades for her stage work. In 2005, she made television history by starring in the movie Romy and Michele: In the Beginning, becoming one of the earliest openly trans actors to play a transgender role on TV. Her breakthrough arrived with Transparent, where her nuanced portrayal earned critical acclaim. She went on to achieve major milestones on Broadway, making history as the first openly trans actor to play Madame Morrible in Wicked. Her additional television credits include recurring and guest roles on The Conners, Never Have I Ever, Grey's Anatomy, and The Peripheral.

Advocacy and Personal Life

Beyond her performance work, Billings is a dedicated educator, author, and civil rights advocate. She serves as an assistant professor of acting at the University of Southern California's School of Dramatic Arts. A long-term survivor living openly with HIV, she has been a vocal activist for LGBTQ+ equality and HIV/AIDS awareness for decades. In 2022, she published her candid memoir, This Time for Me, detailing her personal journey, artistic career, and advocacy. She has been married to her high school sweetheart, Chrisanne Blankenship, since 1995.
