Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Sánchez has built a multifaceted career spanning high-end restaurant ownership, bestselling cookbooks, executive media production, and charitable mentorship initiatives for aspiring Latin chefs.

Early Life and Culinary Roots

Born on February 12, 1976, in El Paso, Texas, Sánchez grew up steeped in rich culinary traditions. His mother, Zarela Martínez, is an acclaimed chef and author who introduced regional Mexican food to national audiences. Sánchez developed a deep passion for cooking at an early age while helping with his mother's catering business. At sixteen, he trained under legendary Cajun chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans, an experience that fundamentally shaped his professional discipline. He later pursued formal culinary education at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island before honing his technique in top New York kitchens like Patria and Café Boulud.

Television and Restaurant Career

Sánchez became a household name through his extensive work on food television networks. He served as a longtime judge on Food Network’s hit competition show Chopped and hosted Cooking Channel's Emmy-nominated series Taco Trip. In 2017, he joined FOX’s MasterChef as a full-time judge alongside Gordon Ramsay, later expanding his judging role to MasterChef Junior. Beyond television, he is the executive head chef and co-owner of the acclaimed Mexican restaurant Johnny Sánchez in New Orleans.
