Tove Lo

Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson, known professionally as Tove Lo, is a Swedish singer-songwriter recognized for her grunge-influenced take on pop music and autobiographical lyrics. Born on October 29, 1987, she earned media descriptions such as "the saddest girl in Sweden" and "Sweden's darkest pop export." In addition to her solo recording career, she is an active songwriter and featured artist across the international music industry.

Born in Helsingborg, Nilsson grew up with an older brother as the daughter of psychologist Gunilla Nilsson Edholm and iZettle co-founder Magnus Nilsson. She received her stage nickname, Tove Lo, from her godmother at age three due to her affection for a zoo lynx named Tove. After spending her early childhood in Lund, her family moved to Djursholm in Danderyd. She developed an interest in literature and writing before enrolling at Rytmus Musikergymnasiet, a music school in Stockholm, where she befriended future Icona Pop member Caroline Hjelt.

In 2006, Lo formed the math rock band Tremblebee with guitarist Christian Bjerring and other students, performing in Swedish bars for three years before disbanding in 2009. Shifting her focus to pop music, she learned music programming and record production, eventually securing a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music in 2011. She began collaborating with producers such as Max Martin, Alexander Kronlund, and Xenomania, co-writing songs for various artists while independently releasing her own early singles, including "Love Ballad" and "Habits."

Lo signed with Universal Music, Island, and Polydor, releasing her debut extended play, Truth Serum, in 2014. Her debut studio album, Queen of the Clouds, released later that year, debuted at number 14 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It produced the commercial hit "Habits (Stay High)," which peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as the single "Talking Body." Her early success brought her Artist of the Year and Song of the Year honors at the 2015 Swedish Grammis, along with STIM's Platinum Guitar prize.

Lo released her second album, Lady Wood, in October 2016. It topped the Swedish album chart, reached number 11 on the Billboard 200, and featured the hit lead single "Cool Girl." Her third studio album, Blue Lips, followed in 2017 as a sequel to Lady Wood, led by the single "Disco Tits." During these years, she promoted her work through headlining concert tours and served as an opening act for major artists, including Katy Perry, Maroon 5, and Coldplay.

Beyond her primary discography, Lo released the albums Sunshine Kitty in 2019 and Dirt Femme in 2022, leading up to her 2026 album Estrus. Her work includes soundtrack contributions such as "How Long" for the television series Euphoria and "Glad He's Gone," which received a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video. As a songwriter and featured artist, she has co-written high-profile hits for others, including Lorde's "Homemade Dynamite" and Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do," the latter earning her Golden Globe and Grammy nominations.
