Best known for his audacious shot-making and unique personality, he has been ranked as high as world No. 13 in singles by the ATP, achieved in October 2016, and world No. 11 in doubles, achieved in November 2022. Kyrgios has won seven ATP Tour singles titles and reached a major singles final at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. In doubles, he has won four titles, including a major title at the 2022 Australian Open alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis. Additionally, he is one of only three players to defeat Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal in their first encounters.
Kyrgios was born in Canberra, Australia, to George, a self-employed house painter of Greek origin, and Norlaila, a retired computer engineer from Malaysia who dropped her princess title from the Pahang royal family upon moving to Australia. He has two siblings, Halimah and Christos. Kyrgios attended Radford College until Year 8 and completed Year 12 at Daramalan College in 2012. He played basketball in his early teens before deciding to focus exclusively on tennis at age 14. At age 16, he received a full scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport. In 2013, he moved his training base to Melbourne Park, eventually returning to Canberra in 2015.
In his junior career, Kyrgios played his first match in 2008 and won his first ITF junior title in Fiji in 2010. He achieved the junior world No. 1 ranking in 2013 after winning the Traralgon International. He captured the boys' singles title at the 2013 Australian Open by defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final. Kyrgios also won three junior Grand Slam doubles titles, winning the 2012 French Open, the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, and the 2013 Wimbledon Championships.
Kyrgios turned professional and recorded his first win in a professional tournament in March 2012 at an ITF Futures event in Japan, finishing that year ranked No. 838. In 2013, he won his first ATP Challenger Tour title at the Sydney Tennis International. He made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2013 French Open, where he defeated former world No. 8 Radek Štěpánek to secure his first ATP Tour level match win. He also qualified for the 2013 US Open and finished 2013 ranked No. 182.
During the 2014 season, Kyrgios won Challenger titles in Sarasota, Savannah, and Nottingham. At the 2014 Wimbledon Championships, competing as a wildcard, he saved nine match points against Richard Gasquet and defeated world No. 1 Rafael Nadal to reach the quarterfinals, entering the top 100 rankings at No. 66. In 2015, he reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, reached his first ATP final at the Estoril Open, and defeated world No. 2 Roger Federer at the Madrid Open.
In 2016, Kyrgios began the year by winning the Hopman Cup alongside Daria Gavrilova. He captured his maiden ATP singles title at the Open 13 in Marseille without having his serve broken. He later reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal at the Miami Open, which allowed him to enter the top 20 rankings for the first time in his career, and advanced to finals in Atlanta. Later, in August 2026, Kyrgios was suspended from tennis for a month after testing positive for cocaine.
