Natalie Wynn

Natalie Wynn is an American video essayist, political commentator, and cultural critic born on October 21, 1988. She is best known for creating and hosting the YouTube channel ContraPoints. Through her channel, she publishes structured video essays covering a range of topics, including philosophy, politics, ethics, gender, race, class inequality, cancel culture, and internet dynamics. Her content often focuses on dismantling right-wing, alt-right, and classical liberal arguments from a left-wing perspective.

Raised in Vienna, Virginia, Wynn was born to a psychology professor father and a physician mother. She initially studied piano at the Berklee College of Music before completing an undergraduate degree in philosophy at Georgetown University. She subsequently pursued doctoral studies in philosophy at Northwestern University, working as an instructor before leaving the program with a master's degree due to dissatisfaction with academic life. She later relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, and worked in various jobs, including as a piano instructor, paralegal, Uber driver, and copywriter.

Wynn began uploading content to YouTube in 2008, concentrating early on on skepticism and critiques of religion. In 2016, she launched the ContraPoints channel in response to online political shifts and the Gamergate controversy. Her videos integrate philosophy, political theory, and personal anecdotes, often utilizing theatrical set designs, stylized lighting, detailed costuming, and drag-inspired aesthetics. To explore opposing views, she routinely portrays different characters engaging in fictional debates. Her work is funded primarily through Patreon, and she expanded into voice acting with a role in the 2022 animated series Bee and PuppyCat.

Throughout her online career, Wynn's commentary and video production style have been covered by numerous media outlets and research organizations, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Polygon, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Her work has also drawn controversy and online discourse, particularly surrounding comments on gender pronoun etiquette and her inclusion of guest voice actors, leading her to address topics like cancel culture and internet harassment in later video essays.

Wynn's work has earned several industry honors, including winning the Streamy Award for Commentary in 2020, receiving a nomination in the same category in 2021, and being named a Peabody Award honoree in 2022. She also topped the Dazed 100 list in 2019. A transgender woman who publicly documented her transition starting in 2017, Wynn identifies as a lesbian and a feminist, publicly endorsing progressive political figures such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She continues to reside in Baltimore, Maryland.
