Lindsay Ellis

Lindsay Carole Ellis is an American author, media critic, video essayist, and former YouTube personality known for her analytical commentary on film, literature, and pop culture. Born on November 24, 1984, in Johnson City, Tennessee, she gained widespread recognition for her deep dives into cinematic tropes, media theory, and narrative storytelling.

Early Career

Ellis began her digital content creation career in 2008 with the production company Channel Awesome, where she performed under the moniker "The Nostalgia Chick." Selected via a public contest to create a comedic commentary show reviewing nostalgic media geared toward women, she wrote, directed, and hosted videos for the platform until 2014. During this period, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies from New York University in 2007 and later completed a Master of Fine Arts in Cinema and Television Production from the University of Southern California in 2011.

Video Essays and Media Criticism

After departing Channel Awesome, Ellis transitioned toward long-form, academic-leaning video essays on her self-titled YouTube channel. Her content analyzed film theory, pop culture phenomena, and industrial trends, covering topics ranging from Disney animated classics and Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals to the blockbuster Transformers film franchise. Alongside her independent channel, she co-hosted the literature series It’s Lit! for PBS Digital Studios and co-created the theatre podcast MusicalSplaining. She became one of the prominent figures in the online video essay movement, building a subscriber base exceeding one million viewers.

Literary Career and Recent Work

In addition to her digital media work, Ellis is an accomplished science fiction novelist. She published her debut novel, Axiom’s End, in July 2020. Set as an alternate history first-contact narrative, the book reached The New York Times Best Seller list and earned a nomination for the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. It served as the first installment of her Noumena series, which continued with Truth of the Divine in 2021 and Apostles of Mercy in 2024. Following a hiatus from public social media platforms in late 2021, Ellis transitioned much of her video output to the streaming platform Nebula.
