Mouni Roy

Mouni Roy is an Indian actress who works primarily in Hindi television and films. Recognized as one of the highest-paid television actresses in India, she gained broad prominence for her portrayal of a shape-shifting snake in the supernatural television series Naagin and its sequel Naagin 2. Over the course of her career, she has won several accolades, including an IIFA Award and two ITA Awards, along with receiving two Filmfare Award nominations.

Roy was born on 28 September 1985 in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, into a Bengali-speaking Rajbongshi family. Her grandfather, Shekhar Chandra Roy, was a noted Jatra theatre artist, while her mother Mukti was a theatre artist and her father Anil Roy worked as an office superintendent for the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad. She attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat through the 12th class before moving to Delhi. She completed her graduation at Miranda House and enrolled in mass communication at Jamia Milia Islamia, but left the course midway to relocate to Mumbai and pursue acting.

Roy made her television acting debut in 2006 with Ekta Kapoor's drama series Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She subsequently won the debut season of the dance competition Zara Nachke Dikha and appeared in television shows such as Kasturi, Pati Patni Aur Woh, and Do Saheliyaan. Her rise to widespread television fame came with her role as Sati in the mythological series Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev from 2011 to 2014, followed by a starring role as Meera in Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq. In 2014, she participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7, finishing in fourth place.

In 2015, Roy starred in Naagin, which topped viewership charts and established her as a leading television actress. She returned for the show's second season in a dual role and hosted the dance program So You Think You Can Dance. Roy made her feature film debut in the 2011 Punjabi movie Hero Hitler in Love. She transitioned to Hindi cinema with the 2018 period sports drama Gold alongside Akshay Kumar, earning a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She went on to appear in feature films such as Romeo Akbar Walter, Made in China, London Confidential, and Velle.

In 2022, Roy played the main antagonist Junoon in the fantasy feature Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, which became the highest-grossing Hindi film of that year. Her performance earned her the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. The same year, she served as a judge on the reality show Dance India Dance Li'l Masters 5.

Roy expanded into web and streaming media with the 2023 series Sultan of Delhi, followed by appearances in Showtime, Love Sex Aur Dhokha 2, and Blackout in 2024, as well as The Bhootnii and Salakaar in 2025. In her personal life, she married businessman Suraj Nambiar in 2022 in Goa; the couple divorced in 2026. Outside of screen work, she co-launched the education platform Ultimate Gurus, opened the Mumbai restaurant Badmaash, and has endorsed brands including Bryan & Candy, Joy, and Spawake.
