In 2016, Carey competed at the Junior Olympics Nationals, where she successfully performed a tucked Kasamatsu full on vault, resulting in the element being named "The Carey" in the Junior Olympics code of points. After attending national team camp in late 2016, she transitioned from a Level 10 gymnast to elite status in early 2017. She made her elite debut at the 2017 American Classic, winning vault, floor exercise, and balance beam, before taking silver medals on vault and floor exercise at her first World Championships later that year.

Following her return to Arizona, Mayor Kate Gallego proclaimed August 17 as "Jade Carey Day" in Phoenix.

Carey expanded her career into collegiate athletics with the Oregon State Beavers gymnastics team, accumulating seven Pac-12 titles and six medals at the NCAA Championships.
