Emma Raducanu (born 13 November 2002) is a British professional tennis player. She has achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 10 and a career-high doubles ranking of No. 259 in June 2026. In 2026, she stands as the British No. 2 in women's singles, having reached three main tour finals. Raducanu is best known for winning the 2021 US Open singles title, becoming the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles major since Virginia Wade in 1977, as well as the first qualifier in the Open era to win a major singles title.
Raducanu was born in Toronto, Canada, to a Romanian father, Ion Răducanu, and a Chinese mother, Renee Zhai (Dongmei), both of whom work in finance. Her family moved to England when she was two years old, and she was raised in Bromley. Holding both British and Canadian citizenship, she is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Romanian. She began playing tennis at five years old alongside other activities including basketball, golf, karting, motocross, skiing, horse riding, and ballet. She attended Bickley Primary School and Newstead Wood School, earning A-Levels in mathematics (A*) and economics (A).
Raducanu made her ITF Junior Circuit debut on her 13th birthday, winning the Nike Junior International to become the youngest winner of an ITF under-18 tournament. She won seven junior titles in total and reached the girls' singles quarterfinals at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018. Turning professional in 2018, she claimed her first ITF Women's Circuit titles in Tiberias and Antalya that year, followed by a 25k event title in Pune in 2019. In December 2020, she won the LTA British Tour Masters title.
In June 2021, Raducanu made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at the Nottingham Open and her major main-draw debut as a wildcard at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round. After reaching the final at a WTA 125 event in Chicago, she entered the 2021 US Open as a qualifier ranked 150th in the world. She won ten consecutive matches without dropping a set, defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final. With this victory, she set an Open-era record for the fewest majors played before winning a title and became the British No. 1.
Following her US Open victory, Raducanu reached a season-ending ranking of world No. 19 in 2021. In 2022, she made her Australian Open debut, reaching the second round, and earned her first professional wins on clay during Billie Jean King Cup qualifying and the Stuttgart Open. She achieved her career-high singles ranking of No. 10 in July 2022. At the Cincinnati Open, she became the first player in history to score a bagel set against both Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka. Her 2022 season was affected by multiple injuries, concluding with a semifinal appearance at the Korea Open.
