Born on December 20, 1997, in Cairo, Egypt, she relocated to the United States with her family as a child. Early Life and Discovery

Yai was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her South Sudanese family had fled during civil conflict. At age three, her family settled in Manchester, New Hampshire. She grew up in New Hampshire, attending Manchester High School West before enrolling at Plymouth State University to study biochemistry with ambitions of becoming a doctor. In October 2017, while attending Howard University's homecoming event in Washington, D.C., street photographer Steve Hall captured her photograph and posted it on Instagram. The image went viral overnight, garnering tens of thousands of likes and attracting immediate attention from major modeling agencies across the globe. She subsequently signed with Next Model Management to launch her professional career.

Modeling Career and Success

In February 2018, Yai achieved a monumental career breakthrough by becoming the second Black model—and the first model of South Sudanese descent—to open a Prada runway show, following Naomi Campbell's historic moment in 1997. This breakthrough established her as an immediate force in luxury fashion.
