British comedy star Diane Morgan is officially bringing back her beloved mockumentary persona, Philomena Cunk, in the upcoming limited series Cunk On Cinema. Netflix and the BBC unveiled the first official trailer for the project, giving audiences a hilariously bewildering preview of Cunk attempting to navigate more than a century of motion picture history.
In the trailer, Morgan's blissfully misinformed documentary host confronts world-renowned directors, composers, and actors with absurd line-of-questioning about the art of filmmaking. Prominent industry figures featured in the preview include Hollywood blockbuster director Michael Bay, Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and celebrated film composer Daniel Pemberton. Cunk attempts to demystify complex cinematic concepts while sitting in lumpy theater seats with stale popcorn, asking fundamental questions such as where cinema came from and why it was invented.
Morgan first introduced the character of Philomena Cunk in 2013 on Charlie Brooker's satirical review series Weekly Wipe. Over the past decade, the deadpan investigator has evolved into a global comedy phenomenon. Previous standalone series, including Cunk on Britain and the viral hit Cunk on Earth, earned critical acclaim for seamlessly blending genuine academic interview subjects with sharp, unpredictable satire.
Beyond her defining turn as Cunk, Morgan has built an extensive acting and writing resume across television and comedy. She created and starred in the BBC comedy series Mandy, played Liz in the acclaimed sitcom Motherland, and appeared as Kathryn in the dark comedy series After Life. Her distinct comedic timing and improvisational skill have established her as one of the most prominent comedic performers in modern television.
Cunk On Cinema is directed by Al Campbell and executive produced by Brooker, Morgan, Jessica Rhoades, and Sam Ward. The three-part series is scheduled to land on BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom on November 12 before making its global debut on Netflix on November 15. The new release continues Morgan's successful creative partnership with Brooker while expanding Cunk's global audience.
