Nu was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and possesses both Japanese and Dutch ancestry. Her mother, Kana Grace Nootenboom, worked as a model and featured Nu in photo shoots during her infancy. Through her mother, Nu is the granddaughter of Benihana founder Rocky Aoki and the niece of fashion model Devon Aoki and DJ Steve Aoki. After spending her early years in New Jersey, her family relocated to Maryland when she was seven, where she was one of few Asian-American students in her school and encountered racism. At age 14, she relocated with her family to Newport Beach, California.
Nu officially launched her modeling career in 2010. Parallel to her fashion work, she pursued a music career, having practiced songwriting from age 12 and composing her debut track in 2016. She eventually signed with Dim Mak Records, an independent record label founded by her uncle, and released her debut extended play in June 2019.
In addition to modeling and music, Nu established a plus-size apparel brand named Blueki. Her profile in the fashion industry expanded significantly in 2021 when she appeared on the covers of both American Vogue and Vogue Japan, along with a feature in British Vogue. That same year, she made her inaugural appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, marking the first time an Asian plus-size model was featured in the publication.
In May 2022, Nu achieved further recognition by being selected as one of the cover models for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. That same month, she released her second extended play, titled Hajime, and received an invitation to attend the White House celebration honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Nu currently lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her younger sister, Natalie Nootenboom, also works within the modeling industry.
