About Tyler Childers
Timothy Tyler Childers is an American country singer-songwriter whose music blends elements of neotraditional country, bluegrass, folk, and honky-tonk. He gained widespread recognition following the release of his breakthrough studio album, Purgatory (2017), which earned him an Americana Music Award. He subsequently earned Grammy Award nominations for his albums Long Violent History (2020) and Rustin' in the Rain (2023), as well as for the singles "All Your'n" and "In Your Love," the latter becoming his first top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
Born on June 21, 1991, Childers grew up in Lawrence County, Kentucky. His father worked in the coal industry and his mother worked as a nurse. Born with clubfoot, he underwent corrective surgeries at 18 months and five years of age. Childers learned to sing in his church choir and began playing guitar and writing songs around age 13. He graduated from Paintsville High School in 2009 and briefly attended Western Kentucky University and Bluegrass Community and Technical College before dropping out to work odd jobs while pursuing a musical career.
Childers began his career performing in Lexington, Kentucky, and Huntington, West Virginia. He released his debut album, Bottles and Bibles, in 2011. After releasing recordings from the radio show Red Barn Radio, he achieved major success with his 2017 album Purgatory, produced by Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson. The album debuted at number one on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. In September 2018, Childers received the Emerging Artist of the Year award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, where he used his acceptance speech to express preference for being recognized strictly as a country music singer.
In 2019, Childers released his third album, Country Squire, featuring the Grammy-nominated single "All Your'n." He followed this in September 2020 with Long Violent History, a project composed primarily of traditional fiddle tracks concluding with a title song addressing police brutality, civil unrest, and racism. Profits from the album supported underserved Appalachian communities through the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund, which Childers established in 2020 with his wife, fellow musician Senora May. In 2022, he released the triple album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?, marking his first top 10 album on the Billboard 200.
Childers released the album Rustin' in the Rain in September 2023, preceded by the single "In Your Love." In 2024, he contributed a live version of his song "Bus Route" to the benefit album Cardinals At The Window to assist relief efforts following Hurricane Helene. In July 2025, Childers released his seventh studio album, Snipe Hunter, incorporating Appalachian music, experimental rock, psychedelia, and gospel music while exploring themes of faith, personal myth, and regional identity.
