About Sue Bird

Suzanne Brigit Bird is an American former professional basketball player who played for 20 years in the United States and Russia. Born on October 16, 1980, she spent her entire Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) career with the Seattle Storm after being chosen first overall in the 2002 WNBA draft. Bird is considered one of the greatest players in league history and the only WNBA player to win titles in three decades.

Bird was born in Syosset, New York, to Herschel and Nancy Bird. Her paternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from what became Ukraine, changing their surname from Boorda to Bird. Influenced by her older sister Jen, Bird played soccer, tennis, track, and basketball. She began playing Amateur Athletic Union basketball in sixth grade and later performed at halftime during a St. John's University game at age 11.

After spending two years at Syosset High School, Bird transferred to Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York. Her team went 24–3 in her junior year and undefeated in her senior year, capturing state and national titles. Bird earned New York State Player of the Year, New York Daily News Player of the Year, and WBCA All-American honors.

At the University of Connecticut (UConn), Bird suffered a torn ACL eight games into her freshman year. She returned her sophomore season to help UConn win the 2000 NCAA Championship. In her 2001–2002 senior year, UConn went 39–0, and Bird won the Wade Trophy, Honda Sports Award, and Naismith Award as College Player of the Year. A three-time Nancy Lieberman Award winner as the nation's top point guard, she finished her UConn career with a 114–4 record and two NCAA national titles.

Joining the Seattle Storm in 2002, Bird made the All-WNBA First Team as a rookie. She led the Storm to four WNBA championships in 2004, 2010, 2018, and 2020. Over her career, she became the WNBA all-time leader in assists and games played, earned 13 WNBA All-Star selections, and made eight All-WNBA teams. Beginning in August 2018, she served as vice president of the WNBA players' union, helping guide the league through the 2020 pandemic and supporting social justice messaging.

Bird also played 10 seasons in the Russian Premier League with Dynamo Moscow, Spartak Moscow Region, and UMMC Ekaterinburg, winning five Premier League titles and five EuroLeague Women championships. Representing the United States, she won five Olympic gold medals (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) and four FIBA World Cups (2002, 2010, 2014, 2018). She is one of 11 women to win NCAA, WNBA, Olympic, and FIBA World Cup titles, and one of two players overall with five Olympic gold medals.

Bird was named to the WNBA Top 15 Players of All Time in 2011, the Top 20@20 in 2016, and The W25 in 2021. Following the 2022 season, she retired from professional basketball. In 2025, she entered the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, followed by the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame and FIBA Hall of Fame in 2026.
