Taurasi was born in Glendale, California, and grew up in Chino, California. Her parents, Mario and Liliana, emigrated from Argentina, and her father was a former professional soccer player. During middle school, her family spent a year living in Argentina before returning to California after experiencing a home robbery. Attending Don Antonio Lugo High School, Taurasi scored 3,047 prep career points and earned national accolades, including the 2000 Naismith and Parade Magazine National High School Player of the Year awards.

She continued her career at the University of Connecticut (UConn), playing for the women's basketball team from 2000 to 2004. During her collegiate tenure, UConn compiled a 139–8 record and secured three consecutive national championships. Individually, she averaged 15.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, earning back-to-back Naismith College Player of the Year awards in 2003 and 2004. Taurasi completed her bachelor's degree at UConn in 2005 as a first-generation college graduate and was inducted into the school's Huskies of Honor program in 2006.

Selected first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2004 WNBA draft, Taurasi earned Rookie of the Year honors. In 2006, she set single-season league scoring records under head coach Paul Westhead, averaging 25.3 points per game. Taurasi led the Mercury to their first WNBA championship in 2007. She achieved a major sweep in 2009 by earning the scoring title, regular season MVP award, a second league championship, and Finals MVP honors.

Taurasi captured her third WNBA title and second Finals MVP award in 2014 as Phoenix posted a 29–5 regular-season record. After sitting out the 2015 WNBA season at the request of her Russian Premier League club, UMMC Ekaterinburg, she returned to Phoenix in 2016. In 2017, Taurasi surpassed Tina Thompson to become the WNBA's all-time leading scorer. The following year, she became the first player in league history to reach 1,000 career three-pointers and 8,000 total points.

Internationally, Taurasi enjoyed extensive success representing the United States and playing overseas in Russia and Turkey. In addition to winning six EuroLeague Women titles, she achieved six Olympic gold medals and three FIBA World Cup championships with the U.S. national team.
