Jones was born on December 3, 1994, and raised in the Oakland City neighborhood of Southwest Atlanta, Georgia. His father left the family when he was two years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his two sisters. He dropped out of Booker T. Washington High School in ninth grade and engaged in drug dealing. Between 2012 and 2014, he faced drug possession charges, leading to a two-year incarceration following his 2014 arrest.
At age seventeen, Jones regularly visited the Quality Control Records studio, where label founder Kevin "Coach K" Lee encouraged him to pursue rapping, with Young Thug and Gunna serving as mentors. He released his debut mixtape, Perfect Timing, in April 2017, followed by Harder Than Hard, 2 The Hard Way with Marlo, and Too Hard later that year. In 2017, he also founded his label 4 Pockets Full, later renamed Glass Window Entertainment in 2023. His 2018 debut studio album, Harder Than Ever, reached number three on the US Billboard 200 and produced the top-ten single "Yes Indeed" with Drake.
In October 2018, Lil Baby released the collaborative mixtape Drip Harder with Gunna, which featured the single "Drip Too Hard." He followed with the mixtape Street Gossip in November 2018, reaching number two on the Billboard 200. During this period, he appeared on the series FishCenter Live, starred in the 2019 film How High 2, and released singles including "Woah" and "Out the Mud."
His second studio album, My Turn (2020), spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, became the year's best-selling album, and achieved quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA. It featured the singles "We Paid" and "The Bigger Picture," the latter receiving two nominations at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. In 2021, Lil Baby released the number-one collaborative album The Voice of the Heroes with Lil Durk and won a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his feature on Kanye West and the Weeknd's "Hurricane." The documentary Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby was released in 2022.
Lil Baby released his third studio album, It's Only Me, in 2022, and his fourth studio album, WHAM, in January 2025; both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. He later released the album The Leaks in December 2025. Over his career, Lil Baby has earned a Grammy Award, an MTV Video Music Award, two BET Awards, and the Artist of the Year title at the 2020 Apple Music Awards.
