Astrid S

Astrid Smeplass, known professionally as Astrid S, is a Norwegian singer and songwriter born on 29 October 1996. She first gained public attention in 2013 by placing fifth on the Norwegian television competition Idol – Jakten på en superstjerne. She subsequently launched a solo recording career, releasing several extended plays, collaborative singles, and her debut studio album, Leave It Beautiful, in 2020.

Raised in Berkåk, a tiny village in Rennebu Municipality, Smeplass played piano at home and flute in her school marching band. Finding classical music too confining, she learned guitar and began songwriting, heavily influenced by John Mayer. She learned to speak English at age 13.

In 2013, at age 16, Smeplass released her debut single "Shattered," co-written by Melanie Fontana, and signed a publishing deal with Sony ATV Music Publishing. Rebranding under her new artist image, she released "2AM" through Universal Music in 2014, followed by a 2015 United States release and a cover of "FourFiveSeconds." Her debut self-titled EP, Astrid S, appeared in 2016 featuring the track "Hurts So Good." That year, she supported Troye Sivan on his European tour.

In 2017, Smeplass provided backing vocals on Katy Perry's "Hey Hey Hey" and performed her cover of Cezinando's "Vi er perfekt, men verden er ikke det" from the Skam soundtrack at P3 Gull. Her second EP, Party's Over, launched in June 2017 featuring "Breathe" and "Such a Boy," followed by an acoustic edition with the track "Mexico." Her single "Think Before I Talk" reached No. 14 in Sweden, where it was certified platinum, and No. 9 in Denmark, where it was certified gold. In February 2018, Smeplass won Spellemann of the Year at Spellemannprisen, becoming the first female artist to do so since 2003. She later joined Years & Years on their 2018 UK tour and supported Zara Larsson's 2019 U.S. tour.

Smeplass became the face of Fendi's F for Fendi campaign in 2019 and performed "I Want to Know What Love Is" at Greta Thunberg's Fridays For Future event in Sweden. She released her EP Trust Issues in August 2019, followed by her 2020 collaboration "I Do" with Brett Young, which peaked at No. 3 in Norway. Her debut studio album, Leave It Beautiful, arrived on 16 October 2020 through Universal Music, led by the single "Dance Dance Dance" along with "Marilyn Monroe" and "It's Ok If You Forget Me."

In 2021, Smeplass retroactively gained songwriting credit and compensation after lyric similarities were identified between French Montana's "How You King?" and her song "Jump." She also starred as Askepott in Tre nøtter til Askepott, contributing her first original Norwegian single, "Når Snøen Smelter." In 2025, she parted ways with Universal Music to release music independently through her label, Joyride, and distributor Gladstone Music Group.

Also in 2025, Smeplass featured on the TV show Hver gang vi møtes. Her cover "Det regner i Oslo" became her third Norwegian No. 1 single, and the show EP Hver Gang Vi Møtes 2025 reached No. 2 on the Norwegian albums chart. On 2 July 2025, she sang the Norwegian national anthem before a Women's Euros match. In her personal life, Smeplass lived in Oslo as of 2017 and dated model Per Christian Wessel from 2017 to 2020.
