Yaya Han is a Chinese-American cosplayer, model, author, and costume designer known for her pioneer contributions to the global cosplay community. Born in Xi'an, China, on April 10, 1980, she spent her youth in Germany before relocating to the United States as a teenager in 1998. Han discovered cosplay at Anime Expo in 1999 and taught herself dressmaking, prop creation, and pattern making. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has designed and crafted over 400 unique costumes across anime, video games, comic books, and original fantasy concepts, establishing herself as one of the most recognized figures in fan culture.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Han spent her childhood in China and Germany before moving independently to the United States. Armed with an inexpensive sewing machine, she began creating intricate costumes inspired by Japanese animation and comic books. In 2005, she transitioned into costume design full-time, founding her own business to produce accessories, cosplay supplies, and custom apparel. Her meticulous attention to detail, high craftsmanship, and public appearances at fan conventions quickly garnered national and international acclaim, laying the foundation for cosplay as a viable commercial profession.

Television and Media Appearances

Han's profile grew significantly through mainstream television appearances. In 2013, she starred in the Syfy docuseries Heroes of Cosplay, where she was highlighted as a veteran cosplayer and competition judge. She also appeared as a guest judge on multiple seasons of the TBS competition show King of the Nerds. Beyond television, Han has featured on Marvel Comics variant covers, appeared in Marvel digital media, and contributed to numerous international documentaries, magazines, and podcasts centered on pop culture and costume design.

She partnered with The McCall Pattern Company to design official branded sewing patterns, and launched the "Cosplay by Yaya Han" line of specialized fabrics and trims with JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores and Michaels. Additionally, she collaborated with BERNINA to release a specialized Yaya Han Edition sewing and embroidery machine. In 2020, she authored the book Yaya Han's World of Cosplay, chronicling her journey and the commercial evolution of cosplay.

Personal Life

Han is based in Atlanta, Georgia, where she operates her design studio and business ventures alongside her husband, photographer and business partner Brian Boling. She regularly attends fan conventions worldwide as a guest speaker, contest judge, and ambassador for costume craftsmanship.
