Xiaxue

Wendy Cheng Yan Yan, publicly known by her pseudonym Xiaxue, is a Singaporean blogger and digital television personality who gained prominence writing about her personal life, fashion, and local issues. Born in Singapore on April 28, 1984, she attended River Valley High School before earning a mass media diploma from Singapore Polytechnic. After a brief period working as a project coordinator, she turned to blogging in April 2003 to document her thoughts online after a paper journal she maintained was discarded during a spring cleaning.

Cheng's background includes a father who worked as an antique dealer and a mother who worked as a property agent, both of whom later divorced, as well as a younger brother. In 2006, she underwent a sponsored cosmetic surgery procedure to alter her nose. She married American engineer Mike Sayre in 2010 after meeting him online, and the couple had a son in March 2013 before announcing their separation in 2023.

Cheng selected her Mandarin-derived pseudonym, meaning "snowing," for her primary English-language blog. Her candid commentary and provocative writing style attracted an audience composed largely of young Singaporean women. Attracting tens of thousands of daily visitors, her site featured personal updates, photography, fashion discussions, social observations, and commercial advertorials. Her blog achieved widespread online recognition, winning the Wizbang Weblog Award for Best Asian Blog in 2004 and 2005, as well as the 2005 Bloggies Best Asian Weblog. It also became the first Singaporean entry on the Technorati Global Top 100 Blogs List and was selected for preservation by the National Library Board in 2008.

Her online visibility enabled her to secure roles in mainstream media and commercial partnerships. She authored columns for national newspapers and magazines, served as an editor for a blog aggregator, and appeared as a presenter at the 2005 Singapore Writer's Festival. In 2006, she co-hosted the television series Girls Out Loud on MediaCorp Channel 5 and later presented a long-running web series on clicknetwork.tv. Her platform led to endorsement deals with brands in fashion, beauty, and childcare, as well as an ambassadorial role for a public anti-smoking campaign. In 2024, she revealed plans for a new podcast alongside media personality JianHao Tan.

Throughout her career, Cheng's published commentary generated several public controversies. Online posts regarding individuals with disabilities, foreign workers, body image, and fellow bloggers prompted widespread backlash, online petitions, and legal threats. She also faced criticism over a satirical technology review video and allegations of misusing her editorial position on a blog portal.

These public disputes periodically impacted her commercial activities. Remarks posted on her blog and social media platforms resulted in lost brand sponsorships over the years, including canceled partnerships with companies such as Fresh and Daniel Wellington in 2020. That same year, public reports regarding past social media posts led to her being dropped as a host by the online media channel Clicknetwork.
