Rick Beato

Richard John Beato is an American multi-instrumentalist, record producer, audio engineer, songwriter, and online educator. He is widely recognized for his music-focused YouTube channel, Everything Music, where he posts song analyses, educational videos, music theory discussions, and in-depth interviews with prominent musicians and producers.

Born in Rochester, New York, Beato grew up in the nearby suburb of Fairport alongside six siblings. Raised in a musical environment, he began learning the cello at seven years old before transitioning to the double bass and eventually taking up the guitar at age fourteen. After completing high school in 1980, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in classical bass from Ithaca College and later received a master's degree in jazz guitar from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1987.

Throughout his career, Beato has worked extensively across the music industry as a session player, audio engineer, mixer, and record producer. In 1995, he opened Black Dog Sound Studios in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he has produced recordings for groups such as Needtobreathe, Parmalee, and Shinedown. He also previously managed the label 10 Star Records. Beyond his studio work, Beato joined the band Billionaire in 1997, contributing to their self-produced 1998 debut and a subsequent 2000 release on Republic Records. Additionally, he has taught jazz studies at Ithaca College and lectured at institutions such as Berklee College of Music and the University of Alabama.

Beato launched his YouTube channel in 2015, utilizing his background in production and academia to create instructional content on songwriting, instrument technique, and audio engineering. The channel experienced a major surge in popularity in 2016 after a video featuring his son demonstrating perfect pitch went viral. He subsequently introduced regular series such as "What Makes This Song Great?" and conducted interviews with notable artists including Peter Frampton, Sting, Brian May, Pat Metheny, Kirk Hammett, and Billy Joel. He has also authored an instructional book, *The Beato Book – A Creative Approach to Improvisation for Guitar and Other Instruments*.

In addition to his content creation, Beato has collaborated with Gibson to release signature Les Paul Special Double Cut guitars in 2021 and 2023. His online work has occasionally faced copyright challenges over song clips, leading him to testify before a United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary in July 2020 regarding fair use and copyright legislation. He continues to manage his studio and regularly produce educational content and interviews for his large online audience.
