Madison Keys

Madison Keys is an American professional tennis player who has been ranked as high as world No. 5 by the WTA. Known for her fast serve and powerful forehand, she has won eleven career singles titles, including a major at the 2025 Australian Open. She was also the runner-up at the 2017 US Open and has reached at least the quarterfinal stage at every Grand Slam tournament.

Keys was born on February 17, 1995, in Rock Island, Illinois, to attorneys Rick and Christine Keys. Her father was a Division III All-American college basketball player at Augustana College. Inspired to play tennis at four years old after watching Venus Williams at Wimbledon on television, Keys began taking regular lessons at age seven and competing at nine. At age ten, she moved to Florida with her mother and younger sisters to train at the Evert Tennis Academy.

After a successful junior career that included winning the 12-and-under Junior Orange Bowl and the Copa del Café, Keys turned professional on her 14th birthday in February 2009. A few months later, she made her WTA Tour debut at the Ponte Vedra Beach Championships, defeating Alla Kudryavtseva to become one of the youngest players ever to win a WTA Tour-level match. Later that year, playing in the World TeamTennis league for the Philadelphia Freedoms, she defeated world No. 2 Serena Williams in a set.

Keys gradually established herself on the WTA Tour, making her top 100 debut in 2013 after reaching the third round of the Australian Open. That same year, she earned her first top-10 victory over Li Na at the Madrid Open and entered the top 50 following a third-round run at Wimbledon. In 2014, Keys captured her first career WTA title at the Eastbourne International, defeating two top-10 opponents, including Angelique Kerber in the final, making her the youngest American titlist since 2006.

Working with coach Lindsay Davenport, Keys achieved her major breakthrough at the 2015 Australian Open, defeating Venus Williams to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal and debuting in the top 20. She maintained consistent performances at majors, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the fourth round at the US Open. In 2016, Keys reached her first Premier 5 final at the Italian Open and debuted in the top 10 of the WTA rankings.

Keys reached her first Grand Slam final at the 2017 US Open, where she finished as the runner-up to Sloane Stephens. Following years marked by injury struggles, Keys achieved her greatest career triumph at the 2025 Australian Open, winning her first major singles title by consecutively defeating world No. 2 Iga Świątek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Considered a leader of American tennis, she has won at least one title on every court surface.
