Julieta Venegas

Julieta Venegas Percevault is an American-born Mexican singer-songwriter who specializes in Spanish indie pop rock. Born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, from the age of one month, she is a multi-instrumentalist proficient in playing 17 instruments, including the keyboard, acoustic guitar, and accordion. Over her career, she has established herself as one of the most prominent songwriters in Latin pop, selling an estimated 10 million records worldwide.

Venegas began her musical training at age eight when her parents sent her to piano lessons. She speaks Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and has a twin sister named Yvonne who works as a photographer. Before launching her solo career, she gained experience playing with various bands in Tijuana and Mexico City, including the Mexican ska group Tijuana No!.

In 1997, Venegas released her debut solo album, Aqui, through BMG. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, the twelve-track album was composed entirely by Venegas and earned favorable reviews from Mexican rock audiences. Her second album, Bueninvento (2000), also produced by Santaolalla alongside Joe Chiccarelli, received widespread international critical praise and was ranked by Rolling Stone as the third-best album in Spanish rock history. During this initial era, she also contributed songs to film soundtracks, including Amores Perros Me Van A Matar for the movie Amores Perros.

Venegas achieved major commercial success across Latin America and Spain with her 2003 album, Sí. Recorded in Argentina and Spain, the record generated widespread hit singles such as Andar Conmigo and Algo está cambiando, eventually selling over one million copies. She followed this in 2006 with Limón y Sal, her most successful and best-selling studio album to date. Driven by the global hit single Me Voy, Limón y Sal earned Platinum certification in Mexico and Gold in several other countries.

In 2008, Venegas recorded her first live acoustic project, MTV Unplugged, in Mexico. The record sold over 400,000 digital copies and achieved diamond certification in Mexico. She continued her solo output under Sony Music with studio albums including Otra Cosa in 2010, Los Momentos in 2013—which marked a transition toward indie pop—and Algo Sucede in 2015, which debuted at number one on the Latin Pop Albums chart. Since 2017, she has lived in Buenos Aires, where she debuted as a theater actress in Santiago Loza's play La Enamorada and released a 2019 album of the same name based on the production.

Throughout her career, Venegas has accumulated significant recognition, winning eight Latin Grammy Awards, a Grammy Award, seven MTV Awards, seven Broadcast Music, Inc. Awards, five VEVO Certified awards, three Oye! Awards, and two Billboard Music Awards. Additionally, she was awarded the Master of Latin Music Award from Berklee College and received a Musa Award in honor of her songwriting.
