Early Life and Education

Kung was born in Los Angeles, California, to parents originally from Hong Kong. Growing up, he spent his childhood between Hong Kong and Toronto, Ontario, before returning to the United States for his higher education. He attended Eastern Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing and theatre. In 2007, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, to attend the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While pursuing his law degree, Kung began documenting his culinary experiments through blogging and working in local restaurant kitchens, eventually choosing to pivot full-time into food rather than practicing law.

Culinary Career and Content Creation

Before achieving internet fame, Kung worked in Detroit eateries such as Standby and Gold Cash Gold. He later launched Kung Food, an underground dinner series and popup studio operating out of Detroit's Eastern Market. When the 2020 pandemic forced the temporary closure of physical food venues, Kung shifted his focus to video production on TikTok. His viral videos featured comfort food recipes, cooking tips, and thoughtful commentary on culture and identity. His unique creations, including Dan Dan lasagna and Faygo orange chicken, resonated with millions of viewers and expanded his digital reach.

Cookbook and Media Projects

In October 2023, Kung published his debut cookbook, Kung Food: Chinese-American Recipes from a Third-Culture Kitchen, released through Clarkson Potter. The national bestseller features over 100 recipes that reimagine Chinese-American cooking while embracing cross-cultural storytelling. Beyond writing and video production, Kung co-hosted the food and culture podcast 1 for the Table alongside drag queen Kim Chi and collaborated with media companies on themed recipe projects.

Personal Life

Kung resides in Detroit, Michigan, where he continues to write, cook, and produce digital content. In 2023, he announced his engagement to his partner, Campbell, after hiding a proposal within the acknowledgments section of his debut cookbook.
