Joel Madden

Joel Rueben Madden (born Joel Rueben Combs on March 11, 1979) is an American singer best known as the lead vocalist for the rock band Good Charlotte. He is also part of the pop rock collaboration The Madden Brothers alongside his identical twin brother, Benji Madden.

Madden was born in Waldorf, Maryland, to Robin Madden and Roger Combs. He grew up alongside his twin brother Benji, who plays guitar and sings backing vocals in Good Charlotte, an older brother named Josh who also works in the music industry, and a younger sister named Sarah. Madden attended La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland.

In 1995, at age 16, Madden, his brother Benji, and a friend started a short-lived band before recruiting fellow high school students Paul Thomas, Aaron Escolopio, and Billy Martin to form Good Charlotte. The band took its name from a children's book by Carol Beach York. Aside from his work with the band, Madden made cameo appearances in films such as Not Another Teen Movie in 2001, Fat Albert in 2004, and Material Girls in 2006, as well as a guest appearance on the musical comedy series The Naked Brothers Band. He also appeared as a guest on the television series Empire in 2015.

Throughout his career, Madden has participated in various business, production, and charitable projects. With his brothers, he created MADE Clothing, which later became DCMA Collective alongside friend Tal Cooperman. He and his brothers also front the production team Dead Executives. In 2015, Madden co-founded MDDN, followed by the company Veeps in 2017. His charitable endeavors include co-founding The Richie Madden Children's Foundation in 2007 with Nicole Richie, serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and contributing to the 2010 charity remake "We Are the World 25 for Haiti." Additionally, he provided songwriting and production assistance for the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer and served on the Independent Music Awards judging panel in 2012.

Madden expanded into television coaching and hosting. From 2012 to 2014, he served as a solo vocal coach on the Australian version of the reality singing competition The Voice, later joined by his brother Benji for additional seasons as well as The Voice Kids. His work on the show earned him the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2013. Beginning in 2022, Madden began hosting the television show Ink Master starting with its fourteenth season.

In addition to Good Charlotte, Madden collaborated with other musical acts and launched a duo project. He was featured on Blood on the Dance Floor's 2012 track "Incomplete and All Alone" and Alex Kunnari & Heikki L's 2013 single "City of Sin." With his brother Benji, he formed the pop rock duo The Madden Brothers, releasing the album Greetings from California on September 16, 2014.

Madden dated Hilary Duff from July 2004 until November 2006. He began dating Nicole Richie in December 2006; the couple confirmed their engagement in February 2010 and married on December 11, 2010. They have two children, a daughter born in 2008 and a son born in 2009. Madden maintains residences in both Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia. Raised Pentecostal in the Church of God denomination, Madden is a Christian.
