Early Life and Education

Hillhouse was raised in Panhandle, Texas, where he graduated as valedictorian from Panhandle High School in 2006. He initially studied geography at Texas State University in San Marcos, graduating with a bachelor's degree. He subsequently earned a Master of Civil Engineering degree from Texas A&M University in 2012. Following his university education, Hillhouse entered private consulting as a licensed professional engineer in Texas, spending nearly a decade specializing in water resource infrastructure, dams, levees, hydraulic design, and river restoration.

Practical Engineering Channel

Hillhouse launched Practical Engineering as a side hobby, originally producing woodworking videos before transitioning to engineering concepts. Inspired partly by a presentation he gave to his wife's elementary school class using a hands-on dam model, he began publishing short educational videos explaining civil infrastructure in plain language.
