Gerard Way

Gerard Arthur Way, born April 9, 1977, is an American singer, songwriter, and comic book writer. He is best known as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band My Chemical Romance, an influential group in the emo and pop-punk genres. Beyond his work with the band, Way has released solo music, co-created acclaimed comic book series, and served as a producer for television adaptations of his work.

Way was born in Summit, New Jersey, to Donna Lee and Donald Way, and raised in Belleville, New Jersey, alongside his brother Mikey. He is of Italian and Scottish descent. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, heavily influenced his creative development by teaching him to sing, paint, and perform. Way played Peter Pan in a fourth-grade musical and developed an early love for music through bands like Bon Jovi. After graduating from Belleville High School in 1995, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1999.

While interning at Cartoon Network during the September 11, 2001 attacks, Way was motivated to make a broader impact, prompting him to form My Chemical Romance and write its first song, "Skylines and Turnstiles." The band achieved major success before announcing a breakup in March 2013. The group reunited in late 2019, performing in Los Angeles and later embarking on rescheduled global tours, including the 2025 Long Live The Black Parade tour across North America.

Way launched a solo musical career in 2014 with his debut album Hesitant Alien, released through Warner Bros. Records. He subsequently issued several individual singles, including "Baby You're a Haunted House," "Getting Down the Germs," and "Dasher," as well as song covers featured in television projects. Over the years, he has collaborated with artists such as Kyosuke Himuro, deadmau5, Ibaraki, and Frozen Soul. In 2025, Way launched a new music project called The Mock-Ups alongside members of The Interrupters.

Parallel to his music career, Way achieved significant success as a writer. In 2007, he released the comic series The Umbrella Academy through Dark Horse Comics, which won the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. His other notable writing projects include The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, an issue of Edge of Spider-Verse that introduced the character Peni Parker, and Paranoid Gardens. Way also founded DC Comics' Young Animal imprint and authored its flagship series, Doom Patrol.

In television, Way co-pitched the animated concept The Breakfast Monkey in 2001 and later co-wrote and co-directed a 2013 episode of The Aquabats! Super Show!, earning a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. He also served as a co-executive producer for the four-season Netflix television adaptation of The Umbrella Academy, which ran from 2019 to 2024. Recognized for his theatrical live performances and narrative lyrics, Way continues to work across multiple artistic mediums.
