Catey Shaw

Catherine Elizabeth Shaw, born April 2, 1991, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. She first gained wide public attention in 2014 following the release of her viral song "Brooklyn Girls," which attracted significant coverage from various news media outlets.

Shaw was born and raised in Virginia Beach. In 2010, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to attend the School of Visual Arts, where she studied painting. She later dropped out of the institution due to financial difficulties.

Her entry into the music industry began when producer Jay Levine discovered her busking in the subways of New York City, where she performed to earn money for food and art supplies. Levine subsequently began working with her as a producer.

Shaw achieved prominence with her 2014 single "Brooklyn Girls," which accumulated over 300,000 views on YouTube. The track sparked widespread discussion and criticism for its portrayal of Brooklyn, prompting reactions from several major media publications. NYMag characterized it as an anthem that would appeal to suburban teenagers and non-residents, while Entertainment Weekly referred to it as "the most hated song on the internet." During this period, Shaw also received online death threats following the song's release.

Following "Brooklyn Girls," Shaw released the single "Human Contact." The accompanying music video, which depicts her smashing a croquet club and curling her hair with bananas, was co-directed by Shaw and Bryan Russell Smith.

Another notable release in her catalog is the song "Night Go Slow," which focuses on a story about two girls named Dylann and Jenny falling in love. Shaw, who is bisexual and has been in relationships with both men and women, has stated that her sexuality plays a positive role in her creative songwriting process.
