Best known for his solo recording career, Smith has released two studio albums, Bronco and High Country Sound. He also gained public visibility as a contestant on the 15th season of the reality television series The Amazing Race.
Smith graduated from Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia, and later attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to establishing a solo career, he appeared on the 15th season of The Amazing Race alongside his then-girlfriend Mika Combs, where they became the seventh team eliminated from the competition.
In 2009, Smith relocated to Nashville to pursue music. That year, he co-wrote the single "Runaway" for the country group Love and Theft, which reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100. Signing with Mercury Nashville, he released his debut single, "We Got Us", in January 2012 after its December 2011 iTunes release. Co-written by Smith, Stephen Barker Liles, and Tommy Lee James, and produced by Brett Beavers and Luke Wooten, the song debuted at number 53 on the country music charts. Its music video, directed by Brian Lazarro, aired on GAC and made the GAC Top 20 Ballot. He was named an artist to notice in Country Weekly's "Ones to Watch in 2012" and by Roughstock.com.
In July 2014, Smith released the single "Love You Like That", with a music video following on Vevo in September. Rolling Stone Country featured him among the "10 New Artists You Need To Know: Fall 2014". He released a self-titled EP in March 2015, which debuted at number 16 on the Top Country Albums chart and number 97 on the Billboard 200, selling 2,900 copies in its first week in the US. His debut studio album, Bronco, followed on June 23, 2015. "Love You Like That" reached number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart in July 2015 and number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. Smith released the second single, "Hole in a Bottle", in August and launched his headlining Stompin' Grounds Tour with Russell Dickerson in September. In 2016, he performed during the season four finale of Bar Rescue.
Smith left Mercury Nashville in March 2018 and signed with publishing company Tree Vibez Music in May 2018. In February 2019, he joined Florida Georgia Line's Can't Say I Ain't Country Tour on select dates alongside Dan + Shay, Morgan Wallen, and HARDY. In August 2019, he signed as the flagship artist for Round Here Records and released the track "Beer Drinking Weather". In June 2020, he released "Colder Than You", his first single to country radio in three years. His second studio album, High Country Sound, was released on April 2, 2021.
Smith became engaged to Christy Hardesty in March 2014, and the couple married in August 2014. They welcomed their daughter, Virginia Rose Smith, on October 31, 2019.
