Banks (singer)

Jillian Rose Banks, known mononymously as Banks, is an American singer and songwriter. She emerged in the music industry during the early 2010s following the release of her debut extended plays, Fall Over and London, in 2013. Her sound draws from several genres, primarily incorporating electronic music, downtempo, alternative R&B, alternative pop, and synth-pop.

Banks was born on June 16, 1988, in Orange County, California, and was raised in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles. At age 15, she began writing songs and taught herself to play the piano using a keyboard given to her by a friend during her parents' divorce. She later attended the University of Southern California, where she wrote a thesis focused on the children of divorced parents and completed a bachelor's degree in psychology.

During her time at university, Banks was introduced to manager DJ Yung Skeeter, who brought her to the British label Good Years Recordings. After posting the track "Before I Ever Met You" on SoundCloud in February 2013, the song received airplay on BBC Radio 1. She subsequently released the EPs Fall Over and London, and served as an opening act for Canadian singer The Weeknd's fall 2013 tour. In September 2014, Banks released her debut studio album, Goddess, through Harvest Records. The album debuted at number 12 on the US Billboard 200 and featured the single "Beggin for Thread," which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

In September 2016, Banks released her second studio album, The Altar, supported by singles such as "Fuck with Myself" and "Gemini Feed." The album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200. Her third studio album, III, was released in July 2019 and reached number 21 on the chart. After departing Harvest Records, she began releasing her music independently, launching her fourth studio album, Serpentina, in April 2022. She followed this with her fifth studio album, Off with Her Head, released in February 2025.

Beyond her primary album releases, Banks' music has been featured in television programs such as Grey's Anatomy, Girls, and Power, as well as the 2014 film Divergent. In 2022, she displayed drawings and poetry from her 2019 book, Generations of Women from the Moon, at the UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles. Early in her career, she received nominations for the BBC's Sound of... award and MTV's Brand New Nominee.

Banks has noted that she views music as her religion and is not religious herself. In 2020, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. She married American lacrosse player Drew Snider in August 2025, and gave birth to their daughter in April 2026.
