Alyssa Edwards

Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson, known professionally as Alyssa Edwards, is an American drag performer, choreographer, and businessperson born on January 16, 1980. Edwards initially gained recognition in national drag pageantry before reaching international prominence as a contestant on the reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race. Over her career, she has starred in web content, television docuseries, and live stage productions, eventually becoming the first champion of RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars.

Raised in Mesquite, Texas, Johnson grew up in a working-class household as one of seven children. Encouraged by his Uncle Bobby, he took up dance and enrolled in a jazz dance program at the Joy Sharp School of Dance. During high school at West Mesquite High School, he instructed a local peewee drill team. He later attended Ranger College and transferred to the University of North Texas, where he briefly joined the cheer team and came out as gay.

While attending university, Johnson was introduced to the local drag scene at the Rose Room in Dallas. After competing in an amateur showcase, he selected the stage name "Alyssa" after actress Alyssa Milano, combined with the surname "Edwards" provided by his drag mother, Laken Edwards. Johnson also established the Haus of Edwards, a drag family that mentored several future performers, including Shangela, Laganja Estranja, Gia Gunn, Vivienne Pinay, and Plastique Tiara.

Beginning in the mid-2000s, Edwards competed extensively in drag pageants, securing titles such as Miss Gay Texas America, Miss Gay USofA, Miss Texas Continental, and All American Goddess. She won Miss Gay America 2010 and appeared in the 2008 documentary Pageant. However, in late 2010, the Miss Gay America organization revoked her title over conflicting business obligations, reassigning the crown to runner-up Coco Montrese. Her All American Goddess title was also stripped that year.

Edwards made her debut on RuPaul's Drag Race during its fifth season in 2013, placing sixth after a storyline centered on her rivalry with Montrese. She returned for the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars in 2016, finishing in fifth place. Beyond main competition seasons, she hosted the World of Wonder web series Alyssa's Secret, made guest appearances as a choreographer and runway coach on subsequent Drag Race seasons, and served as a guest judge on Canada's Drag Race.

Outside of television competitions, Johnson owns and manages the Beyond Belief Dance Company in Mesquite, Texas. In 2018, Johnson and the dance studio served as the focus of the Netflix docuseries Dancing Queen. Edwards expanded her creative projects with a 2019 cosmetics collaboration with Anastasia Beverly Hills, an appearance with Beyond Belief on America's Got Talent in 2021, and an eight-show West End solo performance titled Alyssa: Memoirs of a Queen. In 2024, Edwards won the inaugural season of RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars, earning an induction into the international pavilion of the Drag Race Hall of Fame.
