About Jan Böhmermann

Jan Böhmermann is a German satirist, journalist, television host, writer, producer, and radio presenter. Born on February 23, 1981, and raised in Bremen, he is best known for his public activist stunts and political commentary. His mother was part of the German minority in Poland who immigrated to Germany in the early 1970s, and his father died from leukemia when Böhmermann was 17 years old. He has served as a lay judge at the local court of Cologne and has at least one child.

Böhmermann began his journalistic career in 1997 at Die Norddeutsche, a local edition of Bremen's daily newspapers. In 1999, he worked as a moderator and reporter for Radio Bremen. He briefly attended the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media after several rejections from other drama schools, and later pursued history, sociology, and theater, film, and television studies at the University of Cologne without completing a degree. In 2004, he joined WDR's 1Live, where he created the soccer parody column Lukas' Tagebuch, which launched his broader profile in radio comedy.

Over the following years, Böhmermann expanded into television and print media. In 2007, WDR aired his six-part comedy series Echt Böhmermann. He founded the First Turkish Carnival Club of Germany as part of the RTL show TV-Helden in 2009, a project that earned the German Television Prize for Best Comedy Program. That same year, he published the book Alles, alles über Deutschland – Halbwissen kompakt and joined the ensemble of Harald Schmidt's television show on ARD. He also hosted various radio programs on 1Live and Lateline.

From 2013 to 2019, Böhmermann hosted the political-satirical late-night program Neo Magazin on ZDFneo, produced by bildundtonfabrik. He also co-hosted the talk show Roche & Böhmermann with Charlotte Roche on ZDFkultur in 2012, followed by Schulz & Böhmermann with singer-songwriter Olli Schulz starting in 2016. In March 2022, he produced a pornographic film financed by German mandatory television tax revenue.

Alongside his television work, Böhmermann built a prominent presence in podcasting and radio. After co-hosting the radio show Sanft & Sorgfältig with Olli Schulz, the duo launched the Spotify podcast Fest & Flauschig in 2016. By 2018, Fest & Flauschig became the most-streamed Spotify podcast globally. In April 2017, Böhmermann became the first German comedian to appear as a guest on the U.S. talk show Late Night.

Böhmermann regularly advocates for refugee welfare and has publicly criticized European refugee policies. In 2018, he raised roughly 200,000 euros for a legal aid fund following the arrest of sea rescue captain Claus-Peter Reisch. In 2019, he co-launched a fundraiser supporting captain Carola Rackete and Sea-Watch, raising nearly one million euros. That same year, after satirically announcing a run for SPD party chairman, he officially joined the SPD.

Throughout his career, Böhmermann's satire has sparked major public controversies. In 2015, his show created the viral "V for Varoufakis" video and the subsequent "#varoufake" response addressing German media coverage of Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, earning Böhmermann a Grimme-Preis award. In March 2016, he presented a satirical poem about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Neo Magazin Royale, prompting criminal proceedings under German law and widespread international discussion.
