Stray Kids
About Stray Kids
Stray Kids is a globally acclaimed South Korean boy band formed by JYP Entertainment through a 2017 reality survival show of the same name. The group formally debuted on March 25, 2018, with the release of their extended play I Am Not, following a pre-debut release titled Mixtape in early 2018. Originally structured as a nine-member ensemble, the line-up transitioned to eight members in October 2019 following the departure of founding member Woojin due to personal circumstances. From their inception, Stray Kids distinguished themselves within the Korean music industry through a strong self-producing identity, driven primarily by an internal songwriting and production trio within the group. Over the course of their career, Stray Kids have evolved from rising rookies into one of the most commercially successful and influential K-pop acts on the global stage, earning international chart dominance, stadium-level concert attendance, and critical recognition for their energetic sound.
Formation and Line-Up Roles
The group was assembled through a joint corporate initiative between JYP Entertainment and the Korean broadcasting channel Mnet in late 2017. Unlike conventional idol training models where agencies construct final groupings independently, Stray Kids was formed around leader Bang Chan, who selected fellow trainees to participate in a reality survival format designed to test teamwork, artistic composition, and live performance capability. The permanent eight-member roster consists of leader, producer, vocalist, and dancer Bang Chan; main dancer and vocalist Lee Know; producer, main rapper, and lyricist Changbin; main dancer and rapper Hyunjin; producer, main rapper, and vocalist Han; main dancer and deep-toned rapper Felix; lead vocalist Seungmin; and sub-vocalist and youngest member I.N. A core pillar of the band's identity is 3RACHA, an in-house production subunit composed of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han. Together, 3RACHA write, compose, and arrange the vast majority of the group's discography, giving Stray Kids complete creative ownership over their musical direction.
Musical Style and Early Career Milestones
Musically, Stray Kids are known for pioneering a dynamic, high-energy sound often described as hyper-pop, noise music, or malatang taste—a South Korean slang term denoting intense, addictive flavors. Their production blends heavy electronic dance music beat structures, dubstep synth basslines, rock guitar instrumentation, and aggressive hip-hop cadence with melodic vocal arrangements. The group's early creative output was framed through thematic trilogy series. The I Am series, spanning I Am Not, I Am Who, and I Am You across 2018, examined themes of youth identity, personal struggle, and self-discovery. In 2019, they launched the Clé series, including Clé 1: Miroh, Clé 2: Yellow Wood, and Clé: Levanter, securing their first domestic music show trophy with the energetic title track Miroh. These early projects established their sonic signature and built a passionate international fan base known as STAY.
Breakthrough and International Stardom
Stray Kids achieved widespread commercial breakthroughs with the release of their studio album Go Live in June 2020 and its subsequent repackage In Life. The lead single God's Menu became a viral global hit, widely recognized for its inventive kitchen-themed choreography and distinct musical composition. The group followed this momentum in 2021 by winning Mnet's competitive performance show Kingdom: Legendary War, further elevating their reputation as top-tier stage performers. Later that year, their studio project Noeasy became their first album to sell over one million copies domestically, led by the hit single Thunderous. Subsequent releases expanded their footprint in the United States and global markets, cementing their status as dominant international recording artists.
Discography, Tour Milestones, and Recent Projects
Beginning in 2022 with the EP Oddinary, Stray Kids initiated an extraordinary streak on the global charts, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. They sustained this momentum across consecutive project releases, including Maxident in 2022, 5-Star and Rock-Star in 2023, and Ate alongside their Japanese studio project Giant and mixtape Hop in 2024. In 2025, the group continued their prolific release schedule with the studio album Karma and Japanese mini-album Hollow, while undertaking the massive dominATE World Tour. The dominATE World Tour spanned major stadiums across Asia, Australia, Latin America, North America, and Europe, concluding in late 2025.
