About NewJeans
Origin and Formation
NewJeans is a South Korean girl group established under ADOR, an independent record label operating as a subsidiary of parent company HYBE Corporation. The group made an unscheduled debut on July 22, 2022, releasing their first music video for the single Attention without prior teaser campaigns or preliminary member profile reveals. This unconventional promotional strategy immediately distinguished NewJeans within the global music industry, capturing widespread attention from both mainstream audiences and music critics. Conceived under the creative direction of former ADOR executive Min Hee-jin, the group was designed to embody a natural, relatable girl-next-door aesthetic while delivering musical compositions heavily influenced by late 1990s and early 2000s pop, R&B, and UK garage music.
The group's name serves as a dual play on words. It draws an analogy between denim jeans—an enduring, timeless fashion staple that never goes out of style regardless of era—and the phrase new genes, signaling the arrival of a new generation in pop music. Based in Seoul, South Korea, the group assembled members who brought diverse international backgrounds and training histories to the ensemble, establishing a cohesive sound characterized by smooth vocal arrangements, nostalgic synth textures, and effortless performance choreography.
Member Profiles and Lineup Evolution
NewJeans originally debuted as a five-member ensemble comprising Minji, Hanni, Haerin, Hyein, and Danielle. Minji, the eldest member born in South Korea, contributes clean vocal performances and visual balance to the group. Hanni, a Vietnamese-Australian singer born in Melbourne, gained global recognition for her distinct vocal timbre, performance charisma, and songwriting contributions. Haerin, born in South Korea, is widely celebrated for her expressive dance execution and unique visual presence. Hyein, the youngest member of the lineup, features rich vocal tone and strong stage presence despite debuting at a young age.
The original five-member structure remained constant throughout the group's initial commercial releases and early promotional cycles. However, following complex administrative and legal proceedings involving parent company HYBE and label management between 2024 and 2025, changes to the organizational structure occurred. In December 2025, ADOR officially announced the termination of member Danielle's exclusive contract. Korean courts subsequently upheld the validity of the exclusive group contracts for the remaining members. Consequently, NewJeans transitioned forward as a four-member group featuring Minji, Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein.
Discography and Key Milestones
NewJeans debuted with their self-titled extended play, New Jeans, released physically in August 2022. The debut EP contained four tracks, led by the triple title songs Attention, Hype Boy, and Cookie. Attention attained instant commercial success in South Korea, reaching the top position on the Circle Digital Chart. Meanwhile, Hype Boy achieved historic longevity, becoming the longest-running song on the Billboard Global 200 by a South Korean female act. The physical EP went on to sell over one million copies in South Korea, breaking historical sales records for a debut release by a female group in the market.
In January 2023, the group released their first single album, titled OMG, preceded by the pre-release single Ditto in December 2022. Ditto achieved overwhelming commercial and critical acclaim, setting a record for the most consecutive weeks at number one on the Circle Digital Chart in South Korea. The track also marked the group's inaugural entry on international pop charts, including the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The single album's second title track, OMG, matched this success, further cementing the group's international reach.
The group expanded their global footprint with their second extended play, Get Up, released in July 2023. Supported by triple lead singles Super Shy, ETA, and Cool With You, Get Up debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart. All three lead singles entered the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, demonstrating remarkable streaming authority. Physical sales for Get Up surpassed two million copies worldwide, earning multi-platinum and million certifications.
In mid-2024, NewJeans expanded their regional promotions by releasing double single albums. In May 2024, they released How Sweet, featuring the title track alongside the B-side Bubble Gum. This was followed in June 2024 by their official Japanese debut single album, Supernatural, which featured the titular main track and the companion song Right Now. The Japanese release was accompanied by a major two-day fan meeting event titled Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome, which sold out over 90,000 tickets across both dates.
Awards and Chart Performance
Throughout their career, NewJeans has accumulated major industry accolades across domestic and international award ceremonies. In South Korea, the group earned multiple Grand Prize awards (Daesang) at prestigious events including the Melon Music Awards, MAMA Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and the Korean Music Awards. Their hit single Ditto was widely recognized as Song of the Year across multiple music organization platforms in 2023.
On international charts, NewJeans set milestones for fourth-generation Korean pop groups. Beyond earning a Billboard 200 chart-topper with Get Up, the group secured multiple entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and maintained significant presence on the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts. Their streaming numbers across global digital platforms surpassed billions of total plays, establishing them among the most streamed Asian music acts worldwide.
Cultural Impact and Style
NewJeans is widely credited with shifting the aesthetic and musical landscape of global pop music during the mid-2020s. Departing from the high-concept, complex lore and maximalist production styles that dominated late 2010s K-pop, NewJeans introduced an easy-listening sound paired with minimalist, retro-inspired visual concepts. Their fashion choices sparked a global revival of Y2K aesthetic trends, popularizing wide-leg denim, vintage sportswear, low-rise silhouettes, and nostalgic hair accessories among younger demographics.
The group's innovative branding extended to corporate partnerships and luxury fashion endorsements. Individual members were named global brand ambassadors for premier international luxury houses, including Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry. Their influence also led to high-profile creative collaborations with global media franchises, including official projects with the Powerpuff Girls, Spotify, Nike, and Coca-Cola. By blending musical accessibility with distinct visual storytelling, NewJeans established a lasting benchmark for modern pop group branding.
