About Sangiovanni
Giovanni Pietro Damian, known professionally as Sangiovanni, is an Italian singer-songwriter born in Vicenza on January 9, 2003. Raised in Grumolo delle Abbadesse as the youngest of three children of Pierluigi Damian and Lidia Guerra, he attended the Don Giuseppe Fogazzaro high school in Vicenza. He left school during his fourth year to participate in the talent show Amici di Maria De Filippi. Encouraged partly by his friend, singer Madame, he began writing songs at age seventeen. He adopted the stage name Sangiovanni by adding "San" to his given name because people told him he did not look like a saint.
In 2020, Sangiovanni released his debut singles "Paranoia", "Non +", and "Guccy Bag" under Sugar Music. During the twentieth season of Amici di Maria De Filippi, he reached the May 2021 final, placing second overall, winning the singing category, and receiving honors including the TIM Critics' Prize. His single "Lady" was certified four-times platinum by FIMI, while his self-titled debut EP topped the Italian Albums Chart, reached four-times platinum status, and charted in Switzerland. His single "Malibu" became the most successful song of 2021 in Italy. He subsequently announced his Sangio Live Tour and received four SEAT Music Awards.
Sangiovanni debuted at the 72nd Sanremo Music Festival in February 2022 with "Farfalle", placing fifth, and later released a Spanish-language version titled "Mariposas" with Aitana. His debut studio album, Cadere volare, reached number two in Italy and earned platinum certification, supported by the singles "Cielo dammi la Luna" and "Scossa", which was featured in the series Summertime. In 2022, Forbes Italia named him among its "under 30" figures in music. Following collaborations, summer festival appearances, and two TIM Music Awards, he embarked on his first arena tour in autumn 2022.
In early 2023, Sangiovanni performed during the cover evening of the 73rd Sanremo Music Festival with Ariete and collaborated with Gianni Morandi. He subsequently released the double-platinum single "La fine del mondo" with Mr. Rain and played a fictionalized version of himself in the second season of Carlo Verdone's series Vita da Carlo.
He returned to competition at the 74th Sanremo Music Festival in February 2024 with "Finiscimi", which earned a gold certification. Following the festival, Sangiovanni announced a break from his music career to prioritize his mental health, postponing his planned album Privacy and a scheduled arena concert in Assago.
Sangiovanni returned to public performance on April 2, 2025, with a free concert in Rome, followed by the release of the singles "Luci allo xeno" and "Veramente". That year, he ranked tenth among the most commercially successful artists with Sanremo singles in the FIMI era. From December 2020 to June 2023, he was in a relationship with dancer Giulia Stabile, who also appeared in his "Malibu" music video.
