American actor Josh Hartnett returned to nationwide movie theaters on October 2, 2026, with the premiere of the psychological thriller feature film Verity. Produced and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, the project is directed by Michael Showalter and co-stars Hartnett alongside Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. The feature film serves as a direct adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s wildly popular 2018 thriller novel, which captivated millions of readers around the globe. The theatrical launch represents one of the major commercial film releases of the autumn season, drawing significant public attention and discussion across entertainment outlets.

In the film, Hartnett portrays Jeremy Crawford, a grief-stricken husband navigating an increasingly complex household dynamic following a tragic automobile accident that leaves his wife, celebrated novelist Verity Crawford, incapacitated. Seeking to fulfill his wife’s remaining multi-book publishing contract, Jeremy hires struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, to act as a ghostwriter and complete the remaining installments of a lucrative book series. However, as Lowen digs through private research notes inside the family home, she discovers an unpublished manuscript containing dark admissions that blur the boundary between literary fiction and terrifying reality.

Hartnett’s leading role in Verity highlights an ongoing and celebrated chapter in his multi-decade acting career. The San Francisco-born actor first emerged as a major Hollywood star during the late 1990s and early 2000s, gaining international fame through major studio releases such as The Virgin Suicides, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, and 40 Days and 40 Nights. Following a period where he deliberately stepped back from mainstream studio blockbusters to focus on personal lives and indie projects, Hartnett returned to critical acclaim on television in the gothic drama series Penny Dreadful.

His career momentum accelerated significantly in recent years through a series of key collaborations with auteur directors. Hartnett earned widespread praise for his portrayal of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. He followed that success by starring as the lead character in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2024 thriller Trap, earning accolades for his ability to bring nuance, intensity, and suspense to complex psychological narratives.

The release of Verity provides Hartnett with another high-profile screen showcase that allows him to anchor a major studio genre piece. As audiences flood theaters to debate the movie’s intricate narrative twists and moral ambiguities, Hartnett’s compelling performance reinforces his position as a talented leading actor capable of driving commercially successful and artistically engaging motion pictures.
