Award-winning actress Sarah Paulson made a high-profile appearance at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2026, attending the world premiere of her new drama film Closing Night. Arriving on the red carpet at the venue in a distinctive Danielle Frankel tulle cocoon coat ensemble, Paulson celebrated the film alongside director Cody Fern and co-star Naomi Watts. The feature marks Fern's directorial debut following his acclaimed acting work.

In Closing Night, Paulson stars as Sandra Vale, an internationally renowned movie star who invites her estranged family to the opening night of her Broadway play after thirty years of silence. The narrative explores deep-seated family trauma and unresolved conflicts as Sandra confronts her past and her delicate relationship with her sister, played by Watts, while dealing with an early health diagnosis. The feature was filmed on location in Montreal in early 2026.

The film represents a meaningful artistic collaboration between Paulson and Fern, who first worked together in 2018 on the set of Ryan Murphy's hit FX anthology series American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Fern penned the screenplay alongside co-writer Devon Bostick with Paulson specifically envisioned for the lead role. Speaking during festival press sessions at TIFF, Paulson highlighted the profound professional trust and creative shorthand she shares with Fern, which made stepping into his feature debut a natural progression.

Paulson is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished performers working today, boasting an extensive career spanning film, television, and stage. She earned a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark in the 2016 limited series The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Her celebrated television work also includes starring roles in Netflix's Ratched and Hulu's legal drama All's Fair.

In addition to her television acclaim, Paulson achieved milestone theater recognition in 2024 by winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in Appropriate. Her filmography includes prominent roles in critically acclaimed features such as 12 Years a Slave, Ocean's 8, Carol, and Glass. Following its warm festival reception in Toronto, Closing Night is anticipated to launch a theatrical roll-out in upcoming months.
