Academy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore took the spotlight at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival for the international premiere of the dark comedy feature film The Debut. Written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg and distributed by indie powerhouse A24, the film highlights Moore as a suburban housewife who seeks new purpose in her life by auditioning for a local community theater production. The festival screening in Toronto follows the film's world premiere at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival earlier in September 2026.

In The Debut, Moore portrays Mona Friedman, a quiet New Jersey woman who unexpectedly lands a supporting role in a regional musical titled Nosy Neighbors. As she falls under the sway of the production's intense and demanding director, played by Paul Giamatti, Mona undergoes a dramatic personal transformation. Her initial hobby quickly escalates into an obsessive commitment to method acting, causing her domestic routine to unravel as she channels long-suppressed emotions on stage. The ensemble cast also includes Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, and Eisenberg himself.

The project marks the third feature directorial effort for Jesse Eisenberg, who previously earned acclaim for his directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World in 2022 and his Oscar-nominated screenplay for A Real Pain in 2024. Produced under Emma Stone and Dave McCary's Fruit Tree banner alongside A24, The Debut has drawn praise from festival audiences for its witty, affectionate, and sharp portrayal of the intense dedication found within local community theater circles.

Moore's lead performance in the film further enriches one of the most celebrated filmographies in modern cinema. An acclaimed veteran of both independent cinema and major studio releases, Moore previously won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Still Alice in 2014, along with numerous accolades for her roles in Far from Heaven, Boogie Nights, The Hours, and May December. Her work in The Debut demonstrates her continued versatility in navigating comedic and dramatic nuances.

Following its prestigious festival runs at Telluride and Toronto, The Debut is scheduled for a wide theatrical release across North America by A24 on December 11, 2026. The film is already generating considerable buzz ahead of the upcoming awards season, with critics highlighting Moore's compelling leading turn. Moore is expected to participate in additional promotional appearances and festival panels in support of the project throughout the autumn.
