DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn provided a major update regarding the casting process for the new cinematic Batman within the rebooted DC Universe. Speaking on a studio podcast episode, the filmmaker revealed that formal casting for the iconic superhero is "not very far away" as the executive team prepares the next chapter of their interconnected franchise.
Gunn addressed widespread internet speculation, clarifying that no actor has been cast in the role yet. He noted that the casting director will consider talented performers regardless of whether they appeared in minor roles in past DC projects. Additionally, Gunn highlighted that the character will be roughly the same age as David Corenswet's Superman, framing the two heroes as contemporaries and eventual allies.
As an accomplished writer and director, Gunn transitioned into administrative leadership at DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran in late 2022. Prior to taking charge of the studio, Gunn earned widespread acclaim for directing Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, as well as DC's 2021 feature film The Suicide Squad and the critically praised Max series Peacemaker.
The upcoming Batman project, titled The Brave and the Bold, will mark the Dark Knight's official introduction to the mainline DCU storyline, operating separately from Matt Reeves' Elseworlds franchise starring Robert Pattinson. The film is set to explore Bruce Wayne's relationship with his son, Damian Wayne, introducing the Bat-family to live-action feature films for the first time in decades.
With DC Studios gearing up for its next wave of feature productions, Gunn's remarks have energized comic book fans and industry watchers. Further official announcements regarding directors and cast members for The Brave and the Bold are expected as production timelines solidify.
