Actress and director Courteney Cox marked a major career milestone on September 12, 2026, with the world premiere of her feature film Evil Genius at the Toronto International Film Festival. Walking the red carpet alongside her lead cast at the Princess of Wales Theatre, Cox presented the dark crime thriller to festival audiences and international film buyers. The screening marked her return to directing feature films following a twelve-year hiatus.

Based on the notorious 2003 "pizza bomber" bank heist in Erie, Pennsylvania, Evil Genius explores the bizarre true-crime event through a darkly comedic narrative lens. The film features an ensemble cast led by Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette and Stranger Things star David Harbour, supported by actors Ryan Eggold, Michael Chernus, and Harlow Jane. Cox also served as a co-producer on the project alongside Aggregate Films.

This release represents Cox's second feature-length directorial effort, following her 2014 black comedy debut Just Before I Go. Over the past decade, she honed her filmmaking craft behind the camera by directing multiple episodes of successful television series, including Cougar Town. Critics at the festival noted her sharp pacing and assured visual style in managing complex tone transitions between suspense and dark humor.

Before stepping behind the camera, Cox achieved global fame through her television and film acting work. She remains globally recognized for her iconic decade-long portrayal of Monica Geller on the legendary sitcom Friends. Additionally, Cox has anchored the blockbuster Scream horror franchise for nearly three decades as news reporter Gale Weathers, establishing one of the longest-running continuous roles in slasher film history.

Following its warm reception and positive critical reviews in Toronto, Evil Genius is emerging as one of the most talked-about titles on the festival circuit. Industry distributors are actively negotiating release strategies for theatrical and streaming availability. Cox's successful premiere reinforces her status as a multi-talented creator capable of helming complex, star-driven cinematic narratives.
