Yuya

Yuya was a prominent high-ranking court official in ancient Egypt during the Eighteenth Dynasty, around 1390 BC. He is best known for his influential position in the royal administration, his close familial ties to the ruling monarchy, and the discovery of his exceptionally preserved tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Although not of royal lineage himself, his high status granted him a burial of remarkable affluence.

Originating from the Upper Egyptian town of Akhmim, Yuya was a wealthy member of the local aristocracy. He married Thuya, an Egyptian noblewoman who held distinguished titles in both religious and political institutions. Their daughter, Tiye, became the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. The couple also had a son named Anen, who acquired prestigious titles including Chancellor of Lower Egypt, Second Prophet of Amun, Sm-priest of Heliopolis, and Divine Father. Some historical theories suggest Yuya and Thuya were also the parents of Ay, a courtier who later became pharaoh, though definitive proof of this connection is lacking.

Yuya's heritage has been a subject of scholarly discussion. Anatomical examinations and the unusual, varied spellings of his name led some Egyptologists to hypothesize that he possessed foreign or Mitannian lineage. This theory was supported by his role overseeing horses, a practice introduced to Egypt from northern territories, as well as potential genetic ties to Queen Mutemwiya. However, all items recovered from his tomb were of traditional Egyptian design, leading others to view him either as a native Egyptian or as an integrated descendant of earlier Asiatic settlers. Genetic studies indicate he shared one-third of his DNA with Amenhotep III, suggesting he may have been the pharaoh's uncle.

During his career, Yuya served as a key counselor to Amenhotep III. Among his official royal duties, he held the titles of King's Lieutenant and Master of the Horse. He was also designated as Father-of-the-god, a title likely signifying his role as the pharaoh's father-in-law. In his home region of Akhmim, Yuya performed religious duties as a prophet for the deity Min and supervised livestock as the Superintendent of Cattle.

Yuya died in his mid-fifties to sixties, around 1374 BC, and was buried alongside his wife in tomb KV46 in the Valley of the Kings. Discovered in 1905 by James Quibell, the tomb was one of the most complete non-royal burials ever uncovered prior to the tomb of Tutankhamun. Although ancient tomb robbers had stolen smaller items such as jewelry, the majority of the elaborate funerary furniture, nested wooden coffins, and gilt masks remained largely undisturbed.

Anatomical study of Yuya's mummy showed a man measuring 1.65 meters in height with dark eyebrows, dark eyelashes, and wavy white hair discolored by embalming materials. Embalmers inserted resin-treated linen packs into his body cavity, mouth, and neck to retain a life-like appearance. Scans indicate joint degeneration and tooth wear consistent with an age of 50 to 60 years at death, though the exact cause of his death could not be determined.
