Hollywood star Anthony Mackie is set to return to the Broadway stage in spring 2027 to play the titular role in William Shakespeare's classic tragedy Macbeth. Directed by Olivier Award-nominated director Max Webster, the revival transfers to New York following its acclaimed run in London. The announcement marks a triumphant theatrical comeback for the actor, who last performed on Broadway sixteen years ago.
Before achieving international stardom, Mackie developed his craft as a classical theater student at the Juilliard School's Drama Division in New York City. His early career included prominent stage roles in off-Broadway and Broadway productions, culminating in his performance in Martin McDonagh's 2009 Broadway comedy-drama A Behanding in Spokane, where he starred alongside Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, and Zoe Kazan. Mackie's extensive screen resume also features celebrated roles in films such as 8 Mile, The Hurt Locker, and Million Dollar Baby, alongside his television starring turn in Peacock's video game adaptation Twisted Metal.
Mackie is currently best known to global audiences for his long-standing portrayal of Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After debuting as the Falcon in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, his character officially assumed the mantle of Captain America in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He continues his leadership of the franchise in Marvel's major crossover event films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Addressing the production timetable, Mackie detailed that rehearsals for Macbeth are scheduled to begin in February 2027, leading to preview performances in late March or early April before concluding its run in July 2027. Once his stage commitment wraps in the summer of 2027, Mackie will complete his remaining filming obligations for Avengers: Secret Wars. Reflecting on his return to live theater, the actor shared his lifelong passion for the stage, noting that performing Shakespeare on Broadway fulfills a dream he has carried since starting out as a young performer.
