Brady Haran

Brady John Haran OAM (born June 18, 1976) is an Australian-British independent filmmaker, video journalist, and educational content creator based in the United Kingdom. He is internationally recognized for creating popular educational YouTube channels, most notably Numberphile, Periodic Videos, Sixty Symbols, and Computerphile. Through his engaging interview style and documentary-style approach to science and mathematics, Haran has brought complex academic subjects to millions of viewers worldwide.

Early Career and Journalism Background

Born and raised in Adelaide, Australia, Haran began his media career working as a newspaper reporter for The Adelaide Advertiser after studying journalism. He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he joined BBC News as a video journalist and documentary producer. While at the BBC, he developed skills as a single-operator filmmaker, capturing, editing, and producing short science news reports. This journalistic background laid the foundation for his pioneering work in online science communication, where he emphasizes real conversations with experts over scripted narration.

In 2008, Haran launched Periodic Videos in collaboration with the University of Nottingham, producing short videos for each chemical element featuring chemistry professors such as Martyn Poliakoff. In 2025, an asteroid was officially named 46925 Bradyharan in his honor. Haran resides near Bristol, United Kingdom, with his wife, television presenter and journalist Kylie Pentelow, and their child.
