Bella Thorne is taking the reins on one of the buzziest sequels in development. The actor revealed in early August that she has been tapped to write, direct and star in "Spring Breakers 2," a follow-up to Harmony Korine's 2012 cult hit.
Thorne said producers approached her about the triple-threat role after seeing her feature directorial debut, entrusting her with steering the next chapter of the neon-soaked franchise. She spoke about the project with characteristic enthusiasm, promising a bold, high-energy take on the material.
The move marks a significant escalation of Thorne's behind-the-camera ambitions. The former Disney Channel star, who broke out on "Shake It Up" before building a prolific film career, has increasingly focused on writing and directing in recent years, and "Spring Breakers 2" represents by far her most high-profile filmmaking assignment yet.
The original "Spring Breakers," starring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and James Franco, became a divisive but enduring touchstone of 2010s indie cinema. A sequel has been rumored for years, and putting Thorne in charge as writer, director and lead gives the long-gestating project fresh momentum, and positions the 28-year-old as a multi-hyphenate to watch as she balances acting, music and now feature directing.
